| Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid |
Thinking about remodeling this year? Whether you're fixing up to improve your home's chances for a quick sale, or making improvements for your own pleasure, be sure to avoid these mistakes.
1. Overimproving: remodeling which boosts your home's cost above neighborhood values won't necessarily yield a higher sales price. Most buyers don't want to buy the most expensive home in the neighborhood.
2. Doing too much at once. By breaking a large job into several smaller projects, family life will be less affected, and smaller projects often don't need building permits; check with local authorities. In Columbia and Boone County, building permits are required if you are altering the structure or if you are doing any electrical or plumbing work.
3. Failing to observe local zoning regulations. Check current regulations and subdivision restrictions before starting alterations to the exterior of your house. Failure to comply with required setbacks, for example, could become very expensive.
